What is AI Visibility? The 2026 Guide
The new SEO. Why AI assistants are replacing search engines, and what it means for your brand.
Every day, millions of people open ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity and ask for recommendations. “Best project management tool for remote teams.” “Affordable task manager for small business.” “Which coffee subscription is worth it?”
When those assistants answer, they name a handful of brands, and ignore the rest. The brands they name have AI visibility. The rest are invisible to those buyers.
AI visibility is not SEO
Traditional SEO is about ranking your links in a list of search results. AI visibility is about whether an assistant names your brand in its answer. They're related but fundamentally different.
A site can rank #1 on Google and still never be mentioned by an AI assistant, because models choose what to say from a different set of signals. They lean on what they've read about you across the entire web, not just the pages you optimized.
Why it matters now
Three shifts tell the story:
- Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations before they buy.
- When AI answers, it names only a handful of brands. The rest are invisible.
- If AI names a competitor instead of you, that buyer is gone before you ever saw them.
How to measure it
AI visibility is measurable. You check whether each major assistant mentions your brand across the questions your customers actually ask, best-of queries, comparisons, pricing questions, and reviews. The result is a score from 0 to 100 you can track and improve over time.
