Should You Build an MCP Server? AI Visibility for Tools
Let AI assistants use your product directly, not just talk about it.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard way for AI assistants to connect to external tools and data. If you publish an MCP server for your product, assistants can actually use it inside a conversation. For developer-facing and workflow products, that is a strong and still-underused visibility signal.
From being described to being used
Most AI visibility work is about getting described accurately. An MCP server goes a step further: it makes your product a thing the assistant can invoke. When a user asks an assistant to do something in your category, a connected server means your product is the one that does it.
That is a different and stickier kind of visibility. You are not just a name in the answer, you are part of how the answer gets carried out.
When it is worth building
An MCP server pays off most when your product has an API and a clear job to be done: fetching data, running a query, creating or updating something. If your users already reach for automations and integrations, this fits naturally.
It matters less for purely consumer or offline brands. Be honest about whether your audience actually works inside AI assistants day to day.

Pick the one or two actions users would most want an assistant to run on your behalf
Wrap your existing API in a small MCP server exposing just those actions
Document it clearly and list it where MCP servers are discovered
Announce it, and link a short guide so people (and models) can learn how it works

Shipping an MCP server also tends to earn the kind of coverage that helps the rest of your AI visibility: launch posts, directory listings, and developer chatter, all of which are sources models learn from.
You do not need a huge surface to start. One genuinely useful action, well documented, is enough to become the tool an assistant reaches for.
