How to Add an llms.txt for AI Visibility
A tiny text file that helps AI understand and cite your site correctly.
llms.txt is a simple, standard file that tells AI crawlers what your site is about and which pages matter. It is one of the fastest, highest-leverage things you can do to become easier for AI to recommend, and it takes about ten minutes.
What llms.txt actually does
When an AI assistant tries to understand your site, it has to guess from your HTML, navigation, and whatever it has seen elsewhere. llms.txt removes the guessing. It is a short Markdown file at the root of your domain that names your product, sums up what you do in one line, and links your most important pages with a short description each.
Think of it as a cheat sheet written for models instead of humans. Clear input in means accurate output out: the difference between AI describing you precisely and AI describing you vaguely or wrongly.
Write your llms.txt in four steps
Create a plain text file named llms.txt served at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt
Start with an H1 of your brand name, then a one-line summary in a blockquote
Add a short section of your key pages as Markdown links, each with a half-sentence describing it
Keep it concise and accurate. A tight, honest file beats a long, padded one
Add a fuller llms-full.txt
Where llms.txt is the index, llms-full.txt is the expanded version. It inlines more detail: what you do, who it is for, how it works, and your main topics. Serve it at /llms-full.txt and link to it from llms.txt.
The full file is where you give models enough context to answer specific questions about you, not just name you. If you can, generate it from your real content so it stays in sync as your site changes.
How to know it is working
After you publish both files, re-run an AI visibility check in a week or two. You are looking for two things: AI describing you more accurately, and AI naming you in more of the questions your customers ask.
llms.txt will not fix a weak product or thin content on its own, but it removes a real barrier that quietly holds a lot of good brands back.
